Warwick, R.I. – July 18, 2005 – Two successful entrepreneurs, Peter Briggs and Larry Putterman, today announced the launch of DSC, LLC, a technology company focused on delivering a faster and more cost-effective way for small and mid-sized businesses to protect their data, recover and restore it and minimize downtime.
According to the Gartner Group, a leading independent technology consulting firm, fewer than 10 percent of small and midsize businesses have crisis management, business recovery and business resumption plans in place. The firm also estimates that two out of five small and midsize businesses who suffer a disaster will go out of business within five years. With most IT solutions designed for large enterprises, the availability of affordable technology options to enable small and midsize businesses to effectively protect their business has been limited.
“We looked everywhere in the market for high availability and disaster recovery solutions for small and medium-sized businesses and we discovered two areas that were lacking,” said Mr. Briggs, president of DSC. “One, the solutions were often cost-prohibitive for small to medium-sized businesses to adopt. Two, even with the considerable investment required, the recovery times were too long.”
Mr. Briggs was the founder of ADS, Inc., a traditional hardware and software integrator that offered availability and backup solutions to its clients. Working with numerous businesses on their business continuity strategies, he realized that small and midsize businesses could not absorb the large capital investments necessary for high availability and disaster recovery solutions and could not assume the no-guarantee risk of the shared service model. He identified a significant market demand for outsourced availability and disaster solutions and joined forces with Mr. Putterman, an expert in operations and business development, to create DSC specifically focused on serving the needs of small and midsize businesses.
“Companies can no longer wait until their systems fail to find a way to prevent future outages or disasters,” said Mr. Putterman, chairman of DSC. “Regulatory pressures, such as Sarbanes-Oxley and HIPAA, are driving the demand for more rapid data recovery for large, public companies as well as small and midsize businesses. Understanding risk potential and developing a sound business continuity plan is a requirement of doing business today. DSC provides companies with the real-time backup services to enable 24×7 access to their mission-critical systems.”
“Based on the industry’s most advanced technologies combined with our world-class data centers in Warwick, R.I. and Medford, Mass., we are able to deliver high availability and disaster recovery solutions at a fraction of the cost,” said Mr. Briggs. “As technology evolves, we become the asset managers for our clients eliminating the burden put on the IT staff and enabling our clients to focus more on building their businesses.”
DSC offers a suite of disaster recovery products and cost-effective services designed to meet both recovery time and recovery point requirements of businesses. Its primary offerings include DSC/HA, an outsourced high availability solution that guarantees recovery in two hours or less; DSC/DR, a middleware solution providing point-in-time capture of changed data through the Internet for companies with recovery time objectives of 10 hours or less; and DSC/HS, a hot site that guarantees recovery in 48 hours or less. The multi-tiered service is available across business application platforms, including IBM iSeries (formerly AS/400) and PC platforms running Windows.
The company is initially focusing on providing solutions to businesses in the financial services, healthcare, manufacturing and distribution markets that have the greatest need for high availability solutions. Companies such as Wachovia, the Calvin Klein division of Warnaco, Quaker Fabrics, Nypro, Inc., Symmons Industries and Ocean State job Lot have contracted with DSC for its rapid recovery services.
“DSC was able to come in and help us to determine the systems we needed,” said Norm Sturdevant, CIO at Quaker Fabric Corporation. “Their expertise in the iSeries environment has enabled us to ensure the rapid recovery required by our demanding operations. Moving to the DSC/HA solution has definitely paid off.”
